Exam Paper

So I got my exam paper today, yay!
If you’re not familiar with A Level Art Exam papers, it’s basically a booklet of about twenty ‘options’ and you get to choose one for you exam, as I’m doing 3 different Design A Levels, I get to choose 3 different ones.
There are five sections:
-Stimuli
-Observational
-Design Brief
-Art In Context
-Visual Starting Points

I tend to choose from the first two, just because they give you a word, and it’s pretty vague so you can take it as closely related as you want. The other four give you an actual task, so you are pretty closed off from what you can actually do.
Initially I’m thinking of doing the word ‘Geometric’ from the Stimuli section for Textiles, and the word ‘Gesture’ from the Observational section for Photography.
I have no idea what I want to do for Graphics.
Once I’ve decided on my words I’ll do some mind-mapping, until I find a direction that I’m happy with continuing with.
I won’t be starting my Textiles and Graphics exam for another few weeks, since I’m still finishing off coursework, but I’ll be starting my Photography tomorrow, which is good because I’ve had an idea for a while now about what I’m wanting to do.

The Beast

I was looking for a new artist to analyse for graphics, and came across this animated poem, illustrated by Shynola.

Watch/read it here:

Analysis

Found my last artist to analyse for photography!
Trying to analyse lomography pictures is difficult, especially since the idea of lomography is to shoot not think, you can’t really analyse any of the connotations the artist had about the image.
However, this is a painter, and she does wonderful paintings inspired by work she did with photographers based on double exposures.

The results are so dreamy and ethereal, it makes me want to go out and shoot a ton of double exposures.
Shame the sky is grey and all the flowers are dead.

Portfolio Work

So this whole uni thing is moving pretty quick, I’ve already had one conditional offer, one asking for me to submit a sketchbook of work, and one interview offer.
I’ve been busy sorting out my portfolio and here are some pictures I took to show the dress I made for my coursework last year...

it’s all very exciting :)

Textiles

Today I started playing around with transfer printing...

And I took some photos of my final samples that I finished a few weeks ago.

I really like how they turned out, and it was nice that the sky was blue for once, it actually looks a bit like  summer, except of course, the leafless tree.

ode to jeff scher

I’ve been experimenting with what to do for my final piece. I’ve decided on an stop start Illustration piece.
The drawing part of this took me two hours to do, which is annoying since it’s like 5 seconds of video.

However, my final piece will be about 900 frames, which will all have to be drawn, scanned in, edited, and put into a movie. yay me...

Photography Thursday

I still haven’t done anything new in photography, I’m waiting to get paid so I can buy some film, so here’s some of what I’ve done so far:

Getting to grips with my cameras over the summer. I absolutely can’t wait to try some of the experiments with film!

Textiles Tuesday...

So I have some more felt to show today, as we’re now about a month into the project I’ve got to start making some larger samples, and display them somehowsomewhensomewhere, I have an idea about what I’m gonna do, but I’ma keep it to myself until it’s all sorted and worked out all good and whatnot.

These are prefelts, I figured I prefer to keep them as prefelts because it makes them more translucent, and I’ve incorporated some free machining into them to shake things up a bit. Artist influences for these pieces include Mary Clare Buckle, a felt maker from England, and Mary Button Durell, a San Francisco based artist I came across on Honestly WTF blog.

In other (semi-related) news, I’ve finally decided what I’d like for Christmas. My mum has been asking me for months now, and so I’ve asked for a new sewing machine that can do free embroidery, as well as Alisa Burke’s book ‘Sew Wild’. I’m literally ‘sew’ excited to read it and start trying out some of the things. Haha, how punny.

Oh yeah, and I found my camera lead, I was in bed last night and something kept wrapping round my feet...twas the camera lead.

Photography Thursday

Things are going pretty slow in photography at the moment, but I’m working on manipulating film to create cool outcomes.
I found this very interesting and helpful, can’t wait to try them out!

Textile Tuesday

Some examples of my first felts...

These are the first few felts I made and I must say I’m really quite getting into this felty business. It’s particularly good for my theme of water.
Hopefully I’ll have an outfit post for tomorrow, but it’s not a definite.
Bye :)

Motivation Monday

I’m kind of continuing this post from last weeks, with Lois Greenfield’s work being the motivation, and this being the outcome of that motivation.

I’m so happy with how these came out. It was my first time using the studio, and Bengi and I just went in and shot for about an hour. She got to practise her moves and I got some work done. Win Win.
Isn’t she a brilliant dancer?

Graphics on a Sunday...

This would usually be on a Saturday, but I’m already a day behind so its a Sunday instead. Unfortunately there are no days of the week beginning with a ‘G’, so my alliteration streak has had to come to an end.
In graphics we’ve been working on screenprinting, and since I’ve been going video mad this week, I figured another one couldn’t hurt. So here’s some examples of screenprinting for you to watch :)

Photography Thursday

I skipped yesterdays post, it was meant to be an outfit post, but as of yet I haven’t taken any successful outfit pictures, and thus, the basis of the post is non-existent. Hopefully by next week I’ll have sorted something out *fingers crossed*.
Todays post is about photography, another A Level I am taking. My chosen theme is Lomography, which you can find out a bit more about, here.

These were taken on a trip the zoo over the holidays. They aren’t proper lomo images, I took them with my dslr, and then used the Instagram app to ‘lomofy’ them. As much as I love lomography cameras, I wanted to make sure I got some decent shots, and here is the outcome,
enjoy!
